GUWAHATI: While urging the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) to expedite work on well-delineated city bus stops in the city, the District Transport Department has asked the members of the four city bus associations to create awareness among their drivers and conductors regarding the need for obeying traffic rules.

A source in the enforcement branch said that most of the city bus owners ask the drivers and conductors to deposit a fixed sum at the end of each day, but take no responsibility in educating their staff about halting the buses at appointed bus stops, careful driving, proper behaviour with passengers etc.

Referring to the recent decision to fine errant drivers and conductors instead of the owners, the source said that imposition of fines alone will not resolve the problem unless the city bus associations and owners cooperate in reining in their staff.

Meanwhile, a source in the traffic police said that they will not be able implement any regulatory suggestion on the ground until an official directive is received from the Commissioner of Traffic Police.
