Guwahati: Guwahati is reeling under an intensifying climate crisis, with residents experiencing an unusually harsh summer marked by soaring temperatures and dwindling rainfall. The worsening weather conditions have sparked growing concern among citizens, who blame unplanned urbanization and widespread deforestation for the city’s deteriorating environment.

This year’s summer has brought prolonged dry spells and stifling nights, with many areas reporting a drastic decline in rainfall. Residents say the situation is unlike anything seen in recent years. “The heat this year is unbearable,” said a resident of Chandmari. “Even a few years ago, ceiling fans were enough. Now, the air feels suffocating, and rain has become rare. This is not merely a seasonal issue; it is climate change exacerbated by tree-cutting.”

A homemaker in Panjabari shared a similar view, highlighting the vanishing green spaces in the city. “Concrete is replacing trees, even in our neighbourhoods. Earlier, evenings brought some relief. Now it’s like we’re trapped in an oven. Everyone talks about climate action, but the reality is that green spaces are disappearing daily.”

Environmental experts point to unchecked urban sprawl and deforestation as primary contributors to city’s rising heat index. Once buffered by thick tree cover and regular monsoons, the city’s microclimate is rapidly shifting toward extremes.

Amid mounting discomfort, citizens are urging the government to take immediate and concrete steps. Demands include mass tree plantation drives, conservation of existing green areas, and stricter regulation of construction in ecologically sensitive zones.

Experts warn that without urgent intervention, Guwahati could face even more severe climate events, with serious implications for public health and ecological stability. The consensus among residents is growing louder: climate resilience must become a reality—before it’s too late.
