GUWAHATI: The underground parking complex near Judges Field in Guwahati, once envisioned as a solution to the city's traffic congestion, has become a symbol of civic apathy. The facility, which is now in a state of disrepair, has raised concerns among residents and students, particularly those from nearby Cotton University.

The parking facility is plagued by poor maintenance, with damaged floors, inadequate lighting, and scattered litter creating an unsafe environment. The area is also prone to water accumulation during rainy days, which exacerbates the foul odours and safety concerns. The lack of CCTV surveillance and security measures has made the area vulnerable to potential threats.

Students from Cotton University have expressed their concerns about the facility, describing it as "dreadful" and "unsafe," especially at night. They have also noted that the area has become even more deserted since a restaurant above the parking facility shut down. Locals have echoed these sentiments, with some avoiding the area altogether due to safety concerns.

The Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has acknowledged the issue and plans to revamp the underground parking facility. According to an official, the area faces water damage due to its low elevation, which worsens the conditions despite earlier repair work. The GMDA aims to complete the repairs within this year.
