GUWAHATI: The Kamrup District Committee of the All Assam Primary TET-Qualified Teachers’ Association has opposed the deployment of primary teachers working under SSA to non-academic purposes like BLO (Booth Level Officer) as the practice affects teaching.
Speaking to the media, Kamrup district committee president Krishna Kanta Das of the association said, “The government published a list of 53 teachers given BLO charge. All in the list are primary teachers working under the SSA. The government has given this responsibility to the teachers at a time when they have been opposing their engagement in non-teaching activities. The Right to Education Act and the National Education Policy (NEP) have also advised the teachers to engage themselves only in school and teaching activities. Against this backdrop, burdening teachers with other responsibilities is not reasonable.” Das said, “The government has given this responsibility only to contractual teachers working under SSA, not the regular teachers. Is this a punitive measure against the contractual teachers? Such a question is doing the rounds among the teachers. Is there a third party involved in engaging only contractual teachers as BLOs? The list of BLO has several women teachers. The government should not forcibly engage contractual teachers as BLOs without knowing their opinion. The government should entrust all categories of teachers with the BLO duty.”
