GUWAHATI : Surprisingly, illicit substances are now being carried in ambulances into the city. In a major drug bust, a man was arrested by a Guwahati police team led by Joint Commissioner of Police, Partha Sarathi Mahanta and ADCP Kalyan Pathak, for carrying illicit items worth Rs 14 crores in an ambulance.

The police has informed that the man used an ambulance to transfer these drugs. 200 grams of heroin and 50,000 Yaba tablets packed in different bags were seized from the vehicle.

Yaba tablets are also known as the madness drug or Nazi speed. Abusers consume it by snorting or ingesting orally. Guwahati police managed to catch this smuggler carrying on this illegal activity based on a tip-off. The accused has been identified as Mirajaul Islam hailing from Meghalaya.

Partha Sarathi Mahanta, the Joint Commissioner of police informed that the smuggler was carrying the banned drugs from Manipur. However, the destination of the ambulance carrying the substance is yet to be ascertained.

The incident took place late at night on Tuesday,13th of December. The joint commissioner informed media that, the ambulance was stopped and thereafter the police, with the help of flashlights, discovered the banned drugs from the ambulatory entry of the patient cot area.

The ambulance was a Manipur registered vehicle with registration number MN-03C-0038. It was intercepted at the parking lot of an apartment complex in Hengerabari area of Guwahati.

Mahanta further stated that, the incident is very shocking as such a case has not been registered in the past where drugs were being transported in ambulance. This is why the vehicle cunningly crossed many police checkpoints after entering the state.

A thorough investigation has been launched to nab the other culprits involved in the matter. Just 3 days back, on 10th of December, a case was reported where Assam police seized contraband substances worth Rs 60-70 crore. Five people were detained in connection with the matter.
