GUWAHATI: Eminent litterateur and retired Pandu College professor Bhawani Prasad Adhikari passed away at his residence on Lakhimi Path, Hatigaon, on Tuesday at 10:30 AM. Adhikari, aged 82, had been battling heart disease and cancer for an extended period.
His final rites were performed at Nabagraha crematorium. Born in 1943 in the Makhibaha village of Tihu in the Nalbari district, Adhikari was deeply involved in literary pursuits from his student days. He gained a reputation for his research-orientated and critical essays in language and linguistics, and his significant contributions spanned across short stories, poetry, songs, and drama. Over the years, he authored and edited numerous books and was a regular contributor to leading newspapers and journals in Assam. In recognition of his immense contribution to literature, Adhikari was honoured with the Asom Sattra Mahasabha's Literary Award in 2021. A dedicated member of the Axam Xahitya Xabha, his passing is considered a profound loss to the Assamese literary community. Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma also condoled the demise of Adhikari.
The Press Club of Assam has also expressed deep grief over his demise. Former editor of the Axam Xahitya Xabha's journal and recipient of the Assam government's literary pension, Adhikari was revered as an influential scholar.
Adhikari was actively associated with several cultural institutions, including the Adarsha Janani Shashiprabha Kalita Memorial Committee and the Amrit Prabah newspaper, contributing significantly since their inception. As the community mourns the loss of a literary stalwart, tributes continue to pour in, underscoring his legacy in enriching Assamese literature and cultural heritage.
