GUWAHATI: High tension gripped the Jahaj Ghat area of Uzan Bazar on Friday morning after the Railway Department, supported by Railway Police, launched a controversial eviction drive targeting long-time occupants of railway quarters. The situation escalated rapidly as residents, some of whom have lived in the quarters for over three decades, resisted the sudden move, alleging gross legal and procedural violations.

According to railway officials, the quarters were being illegally occupied without valid authorisation for nearly 30 to 35 years. They claimed that eviction notices had been issued around eight months ago, and the drive was a necessary step to reclaim railway property.

However, many of the affected families contested this claim, stating they had never received any formal eviction notice. More seriously, residents allege that the eviction took place despite a stay order issued by the High Court in their favour. “This is contempt of court,” said one resident. “We approached the court and got relief. Yet, they came early in the morning with police and started demolishing without any explanation.”

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and emotional distress as families scrambled to save their belongings. Protesters shouted slogans against the Railway Department, accusing it of insensitivity, legal defiance, and abrupt displacement without proper rehabilitation.

Local civic groups and legal activists have condemned the action, calling for immediate intervention by higher authorities and a review of the legality of the eviction.

“Displacing families who’ve lived here for over 30 years without due process and allegedly ignoring a court stay sets a dangerous precedent,” said a legal advisor assisting the residents.

By evening, the area remained tense, with a heavy police presence to prevent further escalation. Many displaced families were seen sheltering their belongings under makeshift tents as they awaited clarity on their legal recourse. As the situation unfolds, questions are being raised about administrative transparency, judicial accountability, and the broader human impact of such eviction drives.
