GUWAHATI: There was a major disruption in public transport in Guwahati on Wednesday when almost 100 Green Buses were withdrawn from the roads due to a protest by conductors and drivers against their operating company, Multitech. The protestors have made serious charges of exploitation and unfair treatment by the company.

The drivers have complained about a huge rise in the fixed daily rental rate for running one Green Bus, which has jumped to Rs 7,500. Most of the drivers find this amount unaffordable and those who are unable to pay the fixed rent are subjected to salary deductions, which has angered them further.

To these demands, the striking drivers and conductors gathered at the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) office at Rupnagar. They parked their buses and conducted a demonstration, demanding an instant cut in daily rental rates. The protestors have indicated that they will persevere in their strike until their demands are met.

Despite the protest, approximately 100 Green Buses owned by ASTC and TATA authorities were still functional, offering limited bus services within the city. The development has generated concern among the commuters who depend on public transport for daily movement.

In light of the protest, the drivers and conductors are appealing to them to rethink its policies and have an open discussion in order to put an end to the prevailing problems impacting their livelihood.
