Guwahati: A fire broke out on Tuesday morning at the Orthopaedics Department of the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), triggering an immediate response from hospital authorities and the fire and emergency services. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported in the incident.
According to GMCH Principal, the fire originated from a heated wire panel located beneath a staircase. "The fire was caused due to heating of the wire panel under a staircase of that section. As papers were stacked near that, it caught fire. Not much damage was caused as our officials were quick to respond. Now the fire department is looking after it," the Principal said while addressing the media.
Firefighters reached the spot promptly and managed to bring the situation under control before the blaze could spread to other parts of the hospital. A fire department official confirmed that the fire was contained and that the team was inspecting the area for any further risks. "The fire is under control and the team is looking for other vulnerabilities. No casualties reported," the official added.
While the fire has been doused, an investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause and assess the damage. Initial reports suggest that the fire was minor and restricted to the area beneath the staircase.
Hospital authorities have assured that all medical services in unaffected areas are operating normally. However, the incident has raised fresh concerns over fire safety measures in public health institutions, prompting officials to initiate a review to prevent similar incidents in the future.
