Guwahati: In a decisive move to reinforce food safety and public health standards, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) conducted an intensive inspection drive across several key areas of the city.

The joint operation was carried out by teams from GMC’s Veterinary Branch and Enforcement Branch, in close coordination with the Veterinary Officer of the District Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department, Kamrup (Metro) and the Food Safety Officer.

The inspection targeted meat and fish markets, covering poultry, egg, fish, and mutton shops located in Silpukhuri, Chandmari, Bamunimaidam, Hatigarh Chariali, Narengi, and Satgaon. Altogether, 38 shops were inspected for adherence to hygiene protocols, proper waste disposal, and safe food handling practices.

During the drive, several violations were detected, including improper storage of meat, lack of cleanliness in workspaces, and the absence of valid licenses. Penalties amounting to ₹20,500 were imposed on defaulting vendors for breaching food safety and public health norms.

GMC officials stated that such drives are part of a broader effort to ensure clean, safe, and quality food reaches the citizens of Guwahati. The corporation has also urged shopkeepers and vendors to strictly follow guidelines laid down under the Food Safety and Standards Act.

Authorities confirmed that regular surprise inspections will continue in the coming weeks to maintain strict enforcement and deter non-compliance.
