Guwahati: Green Buses of Assam State Transport Corporation come under Scrutiny
STAFF REPORTER
GUWAHATI: The much-hyped Green Electric buses introduced by the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) have come under increasing scrutiny as public dissatisfaction continues to mount over a host of operational and safety concerns.
Launched with the aim of providing an eco-friendly alternative to diesel-run buses, around 200 Green Electric buses were introduced in Guwahati to reduce air pollution and modernise urban transport. However, the initiative is now facing backlash from both commuters and residents who allege that the buses are causing more problems than solutions.
Talking to the Sentinel, daily goers said, "From the outset, the green buses have faced complaints about their lack of availability and long waiting times, especially during evening hours. A twenty-minute journey can sometimes take up to 45 minutes."
Many office goers and college students have expressed frustration, citing frequent delays and erratic schedules, particularly pointing to delays on Sundays when the buses reportedly wait for other vehicles to arrive before departing.
Another resident shared her experience with Green Bus, saying, "A Green Bus damaged my vehicle while overtaking at a turn. They drive very recklessly at high speeds and don't even give a signal. It's extremely dangerous, especially at turning points."
The issue extends beyond delays. Commuters have raised concerns about reckless driving by bus operators, accusing them of speeding, making abrupt stops, and failing to follow traffic norms.
Bikash Baruah, working in the private sector, said, "Public anger has been fuelled further by the unpredictable stoppage times at bus stands. There is no fixed rule for how long they stop. Sometimes a bus stops for up to 10 minutes before moving again."
Meanwhile, an ASTC official stated that the buses are instructed to stop for a maximum of one minute at regular bus stops, except for high-traffic areas like Ganeshguri. "Often, the buses stop for only 30 seconds at smaller stops," the official added.
Regarding complaints of insufficient buses during peak hours and concerns about buses running out of charge, the official said, "Almost 90% of electric buses are operational on a daily basis, except during holidays. These buses are fully charged in the morning and can run from 6 AM to 9 PM without issues."
Despite these assurances, Guwahatians feel that the introduction of the green buses was rushed and poorly planned. "It could have been handled more smoothly," said a resident. With ongoing complaints piling up, the spotlight is now on ASTC and the district administration to address the issues and restore commuter confidence.
