Guwahati: In a decisive step to prevent urban flooding and improve hygiene ahead of the monsoon season, the Kamrup Metropolitan district administration has issued strict directives mandating the immediate removal of silt after de-siltation activities.
District Commissioner and DDMA chairman, Sunit Sattawan, issued an order on Sunday directing that all silt removed from drains must be cleared within two hours of extraction. Non-compliance will invite strict legal action under the Disaster Management Act, 2005. The directive has come into immediate effect.
The move follows multiple reports from monitoring committees that highlighted widespread negligence, where silt was often left unattended for more than 24 hours after de-siltation. Such delays have been a major contributor to water-logging and unhygienic conditions across the city.
“The delay in silt removal not only defeats the purpose of de-siltation but also increases the risk of flooding during the rains,” Sattawan said, underscoring the urgency of prompt action. He further warned that any delay would be treated as a hindrance to public service, and departments or contractors found responsible would face strict legal consequences.
Reaffirming its commitment to maintaining cleaner, flood-free streets, the district administration has assured that monitoring will be intensified to ensure strict compliance with the new directive. With the monsoon fast approaching, authorities are determined to avert the recurring problem of urban flooding that severely disrupts life in Guwahati.
