Guwahati: In a vibrant celebration of Assam's indigenous heritage, the state government inaugurated the "Assam's Indigenous Cultural Integration and Exchange Programme" on Tuesday at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra. The state-level initiative aims to promote, preserve, and foster exchange among diverse tribal and indigenous cultures of Assam and the Northeast.
The inaugural event witnessed colourful performances and enthusiastic participation from over 360 youth artistes representing 36 different indigenous communities from across Assam and neighbouring states including Tripura, Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh.
The two-day cultural workshop is designed to provide a common platform for indigenous artistes, artisans, and cultural practitioners, especially those involved in traditional agriculture, environmental conservation, and folk heritage. On July 9, the second phase of the workshop will be held at the Kalakshetra auditorium, featuring cultural performances and discussions.
The workshop will host sessions on a wide range of topics including folk dance, music, theatre, fine arts, oral traditions, and culinary culture. Artistes will present their performances in traditional attire, and tribal cuisines will be showcased to highlight the diversity and richness of Assam's food culture. The event will also focus on how traditional practices can contribute to the socio-economic development of indigenous communities.
Cultural scholars, musicians, filmmakers, and eminent artistes will be part of the discussions, adding academic and creative insight into the evolving role of indigenous art forms in modern society. The final day will feature a grand cultural showcase by selected artistes.
Speaking on the occasion, Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra general secretary Sunanda Thakur said, "This is the first such initiative at this scale. Our goal is to bring indigenous cultural identities into the mainstream and ensure their transmission to future generations."
