GUWAHATI: In a disturbing incident that has sparked serious concerns over construction site safety in Guwahati, a TATA Nexon car was damaged on Sunday when a protruding iron rod from an under-construction flyover pierced its fuel tank near the Chandmari bridge area.
The vehicle, bearing registration number AS01 FM 3975, was travelling from Chandmari towards Bamunimaidam when the accident occurred. According to eyewitnesses, a metal rod jutting out from the structure of the flyover struck the underside of the moving car, puncturing its fuel tank and causing significant fuel leakage.
The car, owned by Manas Baruah, came to a sudden halt following the impact. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, the damage to the fuel pipe and the resulting fuel spillage have raised alarm among both commuters and local residents. Many are now questioning the effectiveness of safety measures at the ongoing construction site.
“This could have ended in a tragedy. The authorities must act before someone gets seriously hurt,” said a local shopkeeper who witnessed the incident firsthand.
So far, no official statement has been released by the relevant government department or the construction agency responsible for the project. Meanwhile, public dissatisfaction is mounting, with citizens demanding a thorough investigation and stricter enforcement of safety protocols at construction sites throughout the city.
This incident comes at a time when several flyover projects are under construction across Guwahati.
