GUWAHATI: In a significant step toward improving administrative efficiency in Kamrup Metropolitan district, the long-awaited new offices of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) and the Commissioner of Police are nearing completion. If construction proceeds as scheduled, both offices will be fully functional by Durga Puja this year, marking a new chapter in governance for the region.

Speaking to The Sentinel, A PWD official said, “Buildings is overseeing the large-scale infrastructure project, which has a total estimated budget of Rs 1,203 crore. A senior PWD official confirmed that the DC office at Rupnagar and the Commissioner of Police’s office at Khanapara are priority projects, and efforts are being made to complete them by September 2025. The Commissioner of Police’s office, being constructed on three bighas of land in Khanapara, is an Rs 95 crore projects designed to house key law enforcement operations in a modern facility. Meanwhile, the DC office, currently functioning from a temporary location in Hengrabari, is being relocated to Rupnagar. Built on seven bighas of land at a cost of Rs 58 crore, this office will serve as the nerve center of district administration.”

“The new DC complex will feature two blocks—one dedicated to the DC office and related administrative departments, and another for various district-level offices, including those handling education and health services. This arrangement is expected to streamline operations and improve accessibility for the public,” PWD official sad.

The relocation and modernization of these offices align with the government’s broader push for better administrative infrastructure in Assam. The move is expected to enhance public services, improve coordination between departments, and provide a more accessible and efficient governance system for the people of Kamrup (M).
