Guwahati: The Hiteswar Saikia Foundation recently organized a lecture on the subject, ‘The Relevance of Swami Vivekananda’s Thoughts and Ideology in Present Times,’ at Lakhiram Barua Sadan in the city.
The event was attended by former Vice-Chancellor of Assam University Dr. Tapodhir Bhattacharjee, noted litterateur and social thinker Dr. Hiren Gohain, and prominent thinker and writer Mayur Bora.
In his lecture, Dr. Tapodhir Bhattacharjee said, “Swami Vivekananda is still relevant today. Currently, pressure is being put on us in the name of ideology in the country. There is a conspiracy to destroy the true ideology and impose a false ideology.”
Dr. Hiren Gohain said, among other things, that there is now Hindu-Muslim and caste politics in the country, which is contrary to Swami Vivekananda’s teachings.
The author Mayur Bora said in his speech, “Vivekananda introduced Hinduism through Vedanta or Indian philosophy. He spoke of harmony among Hindus and Muslims. Vivekananda spoke of the human aspect of Vedanta’s philosophy. But now some are creating a confusing picture about Vivekananda’s philosophy.” He said the humanitarian ideals of Swami Vivekananda have not been properly carried forward at present. He added, “If we want to move our society forward in a healthy manner, we must follow the ideals of Swami Vivekananda”.
The lecture was organized by the Hiteswar Saikia Foundation, and the welcome speech was delivered by Dr. Hemaprova Saikia, president of the Foundation and wife of former Assam CM late Hiteswar Saikia. The event was attended by MP Rakibul Hussain, former MP Abdul Khalek, MLAs Zakir Hussain Shikdar, Abdur Rahim Ahmed, and Shikhamani Bora; veteran Congress leaders Hiranya Bora and Mira Barthakur; All India Congress Committee General Secretary Manoj Chouhan; senior advocate Hafiz Rashid Chowdhury; and several other dignitaries. The Foundation’s trustee and Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, delivered the vote of thanks, said a statement from the foundation.
