Guwahati: Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Pijush Hazarika distributed assistive equipment to specially-abled individuals and chaired a series of high-level meetings on issues related to disability rights, OBC scholarships, drug rehabilitation, and transgender welfare at Janata Bhawan.

During the distribution programme, the Minister handed over wheelchairs, hearing aids, and smart canes to beneficiaries, affirming the state government’s commitment to ensuring inclusive growth and equal participation of Divyangs in society. “We are working to bridge gaps and enable persons with disabilities to lead a life of dignity,” said Hazarika.

The Minister also reviewed the scholarship schemes under the department, highlighting the disparity in applications between pre-matric and post-matric OBC beneficiaries. Citing the need for better awareness and support systems, he directed officials to simplify the application process and increase outreach. “Officials must take proactive steps to ensure more students from backward classes receive scholarships,” he stated. To boost enrollment, Hazarika ordered a 30% increase in the target for district-level coordinators and urged sincere efforts from stakeholders.

Later, in a meeting with NGOs working on drug and substance abuse, the Minister stressed on regulation of rehabilitation centers in Guwahati. He instructed concerned departments to convene a joint meeting and announced that he would conduct surprise inspections. “Any center found involved in foul play, especially in the event of a custodial death, will be shut down and blacklisted,” he warned.

The Minister also met members of the Transgender Welfare Board and assured continued government efforts to address their concerns. “The state is working sincerely to issue I-cards and enhance safety measures for the transgender community,” he added.
