GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) carried out a cleanup drive at Lachit Ghat on February 8 after garbage accumulation around the iconic Lachit Barphukan statue became a cause for concern. Waste from nearby markets like Machkhowa and Fancy Bazar, along with litter from fast-food vendors and household refuse, had been scattered across the site. The problem worsened during festivals like Saraswati Puja, when remnants of idols, flowers, and other ritual offerings were dumped, turning the historic spot into an eyesore. In response, GMC officials mobilised cleaning efforts to clear the waste and restore the area’s surroundings. Residents and visitors have called for stricter waste management measures to ensure the site’s cleanliness and preservation.
