GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has warned meat vendors in the city of facing punitive actions in case they continue to violate slaughtering norms.

A notice issued by the GMC Commissioner stated that majority of the meat vendors are violating the norms laid down by the departments while slaughtering animals and performing slaughter at their own premises as well as selling meats without following the due procedures.

The notice said such act is a gross violation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act, 1960, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Slaughter House) Rules, 2001, Guwahati Municipal Corporation Slaughter House Act, 2012 coupled with registration and licensing provisions in terms of the Food Safety and Standard Act, 2006 and directions of the Supreme Court. In view of the present COVID-19 scenario the GMC has asked all meat sellers to slaughter animals at designated places after certifying ante-mortem and post-mortem examination from the GMC's authorized veterinary doctors. In case of violations stern punitive actions will be taken against the erring meat vendors. The GMC has also urged citizens to purchase the meat from approved and licensed vendors only.
