Guwahati: The head of the National Commission for Women (NCW) today discussed matters related to women and girl child safety and training women on artificial intelligence (AI), along with other relevant topics, with the top brass of the Assam Police.

Vijaya Rahatkar, Chairperson of the NCW, on Wednesday visited Assam Police Headquarters and held a review meeting with the Director General of Police (DGP), Assam, and other senior police officers of the state.

The meeting, chaired by the NCW Chairperson, was attended by Harmeet Singh, DGP, Assam; Delina Khongdup, Member, NCW; M.P. Gupta, Special DGP, CID; Mukesh Sahu, Principal Secretary, WCD; Sanjukta Parashar, IGP of CID; Partha Sarathi Mahanta, Commissioner of Police, Guwahati; along with other senior officers from Assam Police and NCW. During the meeting, key issues concerning the safety and security of women and girl children were discussed. Assam Police gave a presentation highlighting the work done in this sphere under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Assam Police gave special emphasis on the reduction in crimes against women in the state and the special drives undertaken for women’s safety. It was depicted how the special drives against child marriage not only led to a significant reduction in such cases but also contributed to lowering the Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR), Infant Mortality Rate (IMR), and school dropout rates.

Harmeet Singh, DGP, Assam, conveyed at the meeting that as envisioned by the Chief Minister, the Assam Police has taken proactive measures, which have resulted in increased charge sheets, higher conviction rates and better citizen services.
