GUWAHATI: Noonmati Police busted a racket of ATM fraudsters hailing from Bihar.

The police arrested two of the gang – Hari Om and Bitu Kumar – from Narengi on Tuesday. The police intensified their vigil, acting on a tip-off that a five- or six-member gang of ATM fraudsters entered Guwahati on April 13. Bitu Kumar led the police to Ramsing Sapori in the Sunsali hill area on the pretext of their gang staying there. However, he fell from the hill and fractured one of his legs.

When the police arrested the duo, other members fled the scene with a car that was found abandoned at Chirang.

According to the police, two members of the gang enter an ATM when a single person or aged persons withdraw cash. They show some sort of urgency and ask those drawing cash to hurry. While withdrawing the cash in a hurry, aged people or women often make mistakes, and then they ask them to check their account balance. With a view to helping them, the duo often exchange ATM cards at the sleight of hand. They also use gum at ATM machines. When ATMs get stuck, they give a helpline number used by their gang. Gang members come and take out the ATMs, and in the process, they change the ATM cards.

According to the police, the gang did check in at a hotel in the Kamakhya Temple premises.
