GUWAHATI: A team from Basistha police station solved a theft case reported from Shantigram Housing Complex, Jayanagar, within 24 hours. Unknown miscreants broke into a residence on May 13 and stole valuables and damaged household property. The police team arrested Kartik Kalita (31) of Chaygaon and recovered the stolen items.
In another incident, a team from Bhagaduttapur OP under Dispur police station arrested Ganesh Kumar Deka, who duped the victim, a jeweller in Kahilipara, by giving a fake cheque worth Rs 1.27 lakh in exchange for two gold rings. In yet another incident, a team from Basistha Police Station recovered goods worth Rs 43 lakh that went missing along with the transporting truck (AS26AC0874) en route from Guwahati to Silchar on April 28, 2025.
The police apprehended two hijackers, Ekram Hussain, alias Imran (22), and Hafizur Miya (27). Their interrogation led to a further operation at Saradiya, Barpeta, resulting in the arrest of two more accused - Babul Hoque (27) and Jiyarul Islam (29).
Based on technical analysis, the stolen consignment was later recovered in Shillong, East Khasi Hills, from the possession of a suspected receiver, Rakesh Kumar Mahato (33).
The missing truck was also found abandoned at Jowai Lalong Tollgate, Meghalaya.
