Guwahati Police held Ex-GNLA cadre and four others in Ronjuli kidnapping case

GUWAHATI: Guwahati Police has arrested a former militant and his brother in a kidnapping case.

Police source informed The Sentinel on Wednesday that two youths had hired a Swift Dzire (AS25 CC6284) from Ghoramara under Hatigaon Police Station on August 24. They took the vehicle to Simatari (in North Garo Hills District of Meghalaya) via the Boko-Dhupdhara route on the inter-State boundary in Goalpara district of Assam.

En route, the two youths intimidated Abu Taleq Akanda —the driver-cum-owner of the vehicle – with arms; and compelled him to drive the vehicle towards a particular house at Simatari. Meanwhile, a group of five persons was waiting for the trio in that house.

On reaching the spot, the youths blind-folded the driver, tied his arms and feet, and they fled with the vehicle.

Meanwhile acting on a tipoff, personnel of the Rongjuli Police (from Assam) raided a house and caught three persons red-handed while they were hatching a plot to kidnap some body. During the raid, one of the trio tried to flee. After he failed to heed the warning of the Police, they fired at him, stated the Police source, adding that the fleeing youth was injured in the incident.

On the other hand, the captive driver managed to make good his escape. Subsequently, he filed an FIR (First Information Report) in Hatigaon Police Station. A case has been registered, and investigation is on.

Police sources added despite several raids in the house, the Police have not been able to detain anyone. However on Tuesday, the two brothers — who own the house — surrendered at the Rongjuli Police Station. One of the siblings – Albert Sangma, was a former member of the GNLA (Garo National Liberation Army).

Later during the day, Hatigaon Police took custody of the siblings and brought both to Guwahati. The brothers were produced before a Court here on Wednesday. The Court remanded them to judicial custody.

Police is on the lookout for the two youths who had hired the vehicle.
