GUWAHATI: With just a few weeks remaining for one of Assam’s most significant religious events, the state government has intensified preparations for the Maha Ambubachi Mahayog, a rebranded and expanded version of the traditional Ambubachi Mela held at the historic Kamakhya Temple. In a high-level review meeting held on Monday, Assam Tourism Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass met with senior officials from the Guwahati Metropolitan District Administration, Home and Transport departments, and the Kamakhya Temple Management Committee. The discussion focused on crowd management, infrastructure readiness, inter-departmental coordination, and overall logistics for the upcoming spiritual event.
According to the official announcement, the Maha Ambubachi Mahayog will take place from June 22 to June 26. The central spiritual observance will commence at 2:56 pm on June 22 and conclude at 3:00 am on June 26. A final inspection of the temple premises is scheduled for June 9, when last-minute preparations and logistical decisions will be finalized.
To ensure smooth execution, a total of 24 departments have been assigned various responsibilities, and a budget of Rs 4.55 crore has been allocated for the event. Authorities are anticipating a turnout even higher than last year’s seven lakh pilgrims, prompting a more structured and expansive approach to planning. The renaming of the event from “Ambubachi Mela” to “Maha Ambubachi Mahayog” signifies this transformation.
“We are expecting an even larger turnout this year. To facilitate smooth communication and coordination, a dedicated communication cell will be established to guide devotees and ensure a seamless spiritual experience,” said Minister Dass.
Several key measures have been announced for the event, i.e., a ban on open-soled footwear, including sandals, has been implemented around the temple premises to maintain sanctity and enhance security. Contingency plans have been prepared to address adverse weather conditions. If required, the Pandu road route may be closed, with pilgrims restricted to two designated access paths.
The administration has emphasized equal access for all devotees, announcing that no special arrangements will be made for VIPs or VVIPs, reaffirming the commitment to inclusivity in spiritual participation.
Authorities have urged all pilgrims to cooperate fully, maintain discipline, and avoid any disruptions during the Mahayog. If any COVID-19 safety protocols are reintroduced due to public health advisories, they will be strictly enforced.
