GUWAHATI: The results of the Guwahati Press Club (GPC) elections, held after 17 long years, were announced on Friday morning. A total of 816 members of the GPC were to cast their votes out of which 760 filled the ballot.
The announcement was made at a press conference jointly addressed by advocate Bijon Kumar Mahajan, Returning Officer of the GPC Elections and Ajit Patowary, Presiding Officer of the GPC Election Committee, at 5-30 a.m. on Friday, soon after the counting of votes concluded.
The new GPC executive committee has been formed for the term 2020-2022.
Manoj Kumar Nath has been elected as the GPC president and Sanjoy Ray has been elected as the GPC general secretary for the above term. Dhaniram Kalita has been elected to the post of GPC vice president, while Mousumi Sarma Barua has been elected as the other vice president of the GPC, which is reserved for women.
Manindra Deka has been elected to the post of assistant general secretary of the GPC, while Manisha Kalita has been elected to the other post of the assistant general secretary of the GPC, which is reserved for its women members.
Raju Baruah has been elected as the GPC organizing secretary, while Nayan Pratim Kumar has been elected to the post of the GPC treasurer, and Pallabi Bora and Dhiraj Hazarika have been elected to the posts of cultural secretary and sports secretary respectively.
There were 36 candidates, including eight women, in fray for the ten posts, for which the elections were held. Assam Press Correspondents’ Union (APCU) congratulated the newly formed executive committe and stated, “We are hopefull that the committee is an introduction of a new era of the Guwahati Press Club and it will work towards the upliftment of press in the region.”
