GUWAHATI: Nearly five decades after its birth the Guwahati Press Club (GPC) on Sunday found its permanent address. The State Cabinet has decided to allot two bighas of land at Rupnagar to the GPC for its permanent premises.

An elated general secretary of the GPC Sanjoy Ray, while thanking the State Government for allotting the plot of land, said it is a dream come true for every journalist working in Assam. Ray said a general body meeting of the GPC will be held either in January or February, 2021 to chalk out the detailed plan to set up a permanent complex of the Press Club at the land allotted by the government.

"At this moment I can only say that the permanent complex of the GPC will have world class infrastructures and facilities for its members. We all have to work together now and build the permanent complex," Ray said.

Veteran photo journalist AnupamNath, who is now working for the Associated Press (AP) to cover the South East Asia, said the development is proving to be both emotional and self-satisfying experience for him.

"During my 26 years of active journalistic career I have visited innumerable places in India and abroad. Everywhere I went for my news assignments I found press clubs with all modern facilities and infrastructures. Even the places like Shillong and Agartala have press clubs at permanent premises. I felt ashamed when my journalist friends from different parts of India and abroad used to visit Guwahati as the GPC was functioning from temporary premises at Ambari with poor facilities. Thus allotment of permanent land is both emotional and self-satisfying experience for me. I hope and pray that the GPC turns out to be one of the best press clubs in India," Nath said.

The central committee of Assam Press Correspondents' Union (APCU) has also thanked the State Government for allotting land to the GPC.
