GUWAHATI: Guwahati recently saw two incidents that raised serious questions about public safety and traffic rule compliance.
The incidents occurred in various areas of the city and have triggered outrage among the people and also pointed to the necessity of greater vigilance against such activities.
In the initial case, a youth was caught on camera doing a risky stunt at Ganeshguri, where he was sitting on top of a moving car and smoking a lit cigarette.
The number plate of the vehicle was deliberately covered, showing only a partial registration number—AS01EW315—with the last digit not visible. This act of reckless driving not only caused traffic obstruction but also endangered road safety, and residents called for stricter punishment for such offenses.
In another Beltola Market incident, the notorious 'Siren Gang' was seen, sending terror among local consumers. A private car, with registration number AS01FF3872, was seen running an unauthorized siren, spreading panic and confusion among the crowded market complex.
Sirens used by private cars have been an increasing menace, as it is misleading people and diluting the authenticity of official emergency services.
These incidents have fueled demands for stricter enforcement actions and more surveillance to counteract dangerous driving on the roads. Local authorities have yet to issue statements on whether investigations into these cases are ongoing.
