GUWAHATI: Guwahati has emerged as India's fastest-growing destination for international travelers, according to a recent report by digital travel platform Agoda. The "New Horizons" report also highlighted Puri's rise as a prominent domestic tourism destination and noted the increasing popularity of Langkawi, Malaysia, among Indian tourists heading abroad.

The capital city of Assam has made a significant leap, now ranking among the top 20 international visitor destinations in India, a remarkable shift from its previous position outside the top 50.

Guwahati's rise can be attributed to its strategic location as the gateway to Northeast India, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural experiences, and modern amenities. The city's surge in popularity reflects its growing appeal to both domestic and international tourists.

The Northeast region’s tourism appeal has been further strengthened by high-profile cultural events and music festivals. International artists like Boney M, Akon, and Clean Bandit have performed in the region, and upcoming events, such as Ed Sheeran’s concert in Shillong this February, continue to boost its visibility.

Traditional celebrations like the Hornbill Festival and Cherry Blossom Festival have also played a key role in drawing global attention to the region.

On the domestic front, Puri has become increasingly popular among Indian travelers, combining spiritual experiences, particularly at the Jagannath Temple, with its scenic beachfront offerings. Meanwhile, Langkawi has attracted Indian tourists, particularly since Malaysia introduced visa-free travel for Indian nationals.

The Malaysian destination’s pristine beaches, diverse ecosystems, and recreational opportunities have made it an appealing choice for outbound Indian travelers.

The Agoda report also shed light on broader travel trends, with Shanghai, Jeju, Paris, Nha Trang, and Fukuoka emerging as popular destinations in Asia.
