Guwahati: The polling in the second phase of the Panchayat election has so far been peaceful, with no untoward incident reported till the filing of this report. The second phase of polling was held in 13 districts in Lower and Central Assam. With this, the voting process in the two-phase Panchayat poll has come to an end. The counting of ballots is scheduled for Sunday, May 11.
According to sources in the Assam State Election Commission (ASEC), there has been no report of any untoward incident occurring till the evening today in any of the districts that went to the polls. In the first phase of polling on May 2, sporadic incidents were reported from several places, which led to repolling being held in 44 polling stations on May 4.
Latest information from ASEC revealed that the overall approximate turnout was 56.71%. But this is expected to go up as detailed information comes in later from all polling stations.
The district-wise approximate voter turnout is as follows: Nalbari 59.45%, Dhubri 52.38%, South Salmara-Mankachar 58%, Goalpara 56.22%, Bongaigaon 62.72%, Barpeta 60.22%, Bajali 57%, Kamrup 51.33%, Kamrup Metro 56.84%, Hojai 57.65%, Nagaon 51.7%, Morigaon 60.51%, and Darrang 53.25%.
Voting started at 7.30 am in all polling stations and concluded by 4.30 pm. However, due to long queues at many polling stations, the voting continued even after 4.30 pm, the official closing time for voting.
With the conclusion of the Phase II voting today, the fate of a total of 29,608 candidates is now sealed in ballot boxes. The results will be known only after the counting of ballots takes place on May 11.
Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma voted at Amingaon Bengali High School in the Kamrup district. The polling station is located under Lachitgarh Panchayat.
Several cabinet ministers also voted in the second phase of polling today at their respective polling stations. Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary cast his vote at Danguapara Model ME School under Tihu LAC in the Nalbari district. Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah voted at Chandkuchi in the Nalbari district. Minister Pijush Hazarika cast his vote at Morakollong LP School at Ahatguri in the Morigaon district.
After casting his vote, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma posted on social media platforms, “Voted for a prosperous future for rural Assam.”
