GUWAHATI: Advocate Shamima Jahan was sworn in as an Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on Wednesday, marking a significant development for the judiciary serving the northeastern states of Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh. The oath of office was administered by Chief Justice Vijay Bishnoi during a ceremonial function held at the High Court premises in Guwahati.

Justice Jahan’s appointment, effective from May 26, was issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice, Department of Justice. Her elevation comes as part of a broader judicial reshuffle, with the central government recently announcing the appointment of seven advocates to judgeships across various High Courts in the country. Her name had earlier been recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium, recognizing her legal expertise and contributions to the legal community.

This development is one among several ongoing changes in the Indian judiciary. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai, proposed the transfer or repatriation of 21 judges across different High Courts. Among them, Justice Lanusungkum Jamir of the Gauhati High Court has been proposed for transfer to the Calcutta High Court, Justice Manash Ranjan Pathak to the Orissa High Court, and Justice Suman Shyam to the Bombay High Court.
