GUWAHATI: In a bid to encourage the plantation of trees in the city, the forest department is planning to break a world record in terms of the distribution of the largest number of saplings in a single location in a day. Dr. Priyasa Saikia, Divisional Forest Officer for Social Forestry of the Guwahati Social Forestry Division, mentioned that the event will take place on September 10 at the premises of the Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati. She also mentioned that the department is expecting a huge number of people to take part in the event and collect free saplings of a variety of fruit-bearing as well as commercially viable plants.

Speaking to the Sentinel, she called on all the citizens of the city to visit the event and take part in the world record-setting event. She also mentioned that all arrangements are being made by the department to ensure the smooth conduct of the free sapling distribution event. It is important to note that the current record for the distribution of saplings within 24 hours is 76824 and was held by the Department of Environment (Forest and Climate Change), Department of Tourism, Government of Uttar Pradesh, and District Administration, Prayagraj, India, on August 9, 2019. It is important to note that this free distribution of saplings is being organised one week ahead of the proposed plantation of 1 crore saplings as announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma under the ‘Amrit Briksha Andolan’ campaign.
