Guwahati: Thai team explores Assam handloom and handicrafts sector

Guwahati: A 14-member Thai delegation, led by Kiran Moongtin, Minister attached to the Department of South Asian, Middle East and African Affairs, Government of Thailand, arrived in Guwahati as part of their official visit to Assam from July 13 to 18. The delegation comprises high-ranking officials and experts from various Thai government departments, educational institutions, trade associations, and the Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi.

The delegation includes Kasemsan Thongsiri (Director, Division of South Asia and Central Asia), Kulkaew Kowattanawaranon (First Secretary), and other officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand. Representatives from the Creative Economy Agency –Wariya Boonyarit and Duangkamon Kaensarn – also joined the visit, along with academic leaders like Supaswad Nimsmer Assistant Manager, International Relations from Dusit Thani College and faculty members from Silpakorn University.

During their visit, the delegation participated in a stakeholder interaction session at NEDFi Haat, Guwahati, organized by the Assam Government’s Handloom and Textiles Department. The event was attended by senior officials, including department secretary Bijoylakhmi Baruah, director Parag Moni Mahanta, and additional director Ranjit Deka.

The Thai delegation was welcomed with traditional Assamese handwoven gamosas. They were introduced to Assam’s rich textile heritage, including exhibits of traditional pat, muga, eri, and cotton fabrics crafted by various indigenous communities. NEDFi officials also showcased local products such as handicrafts, tea leaves, turmeric, and processed food items like jelly.

The delegation further includes Tanarat Teeratankiat from the Panyapiwat Institute of Management, Chawanat Sinthukiow (Chairman, Federation of Spa & Wellness Association), Ben Montgomery (Vice President, Thai Hostel Association), and officials from the Royal Thai Embassy –Jakarin Treedara and Rishita.

The delegation will continue its tour across Assam until July 18 to explore opportunities for cultural, academic, and economic collaboration.
