Guwahati: On Thursday, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) removed all iron barricades from near the Marwet Petrol Pump, the site of road repair on the stretch from Khanapara to Jorabat, enabling normal traffic flow throughout the day.
The Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) stated that, effective today, the Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) placement works have been stopped by NHAI, and the agency will shift to bituminous work instead. The bituminous work is expected to commence on Saturday and will be carried out phase-wise at night.
In light of the above changes, the traffic regulations imposed earlier under the advisory issued on Wednesday were set aside, and normal traffic movement will resume.
Movement of vehicles coming from Upper Assam to Guwahati and onwards had been affected, with all vehicles diverted from the Jagiroad, Chamota and Digaru points due to the repair works on the stretch of national highway from Khanapara to Jorabat.
Earlier, the traffic advisory on Wednesday said that the road repairs have led to significant traffic bottlenecks. The first phase of the work began on an 80-metre stretch on the Khanapara-Jorabat route. The road, which has a total width of 8.75 metres, is being repaired in halves, allowing only one car to pass at a time on the remaining portion, resulting in heavy traffic congestion in the area.
According to ADCP, the second phase of the work was to take place near the Hanuman Temple, while a third phase was also scheduled to begin soon. The repair work, specifically the placement of PQC (Pavement Quality Concrete) panels, is being carried out by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) with the aim of completing it before the onset of the rainy season.
In view of the ongoing congestion and to facilitate smoother traffic flow, the traffic department hasd issued a Traffic Management Advisory for vehicles entering Guwahati via Jorabat from Upper Assam and Meghalaya. As per the advisory, all goods-carrying vehicles from Upper Assam will be diverted at Kaliabor Tiniali and rerouted through Sonitpur, Darrang, and Baihata Chariali. Additionally, goods vehicles from Nagaon, Morigaon, and Meghalaya will only be allowed to enter Guwahati city limits between 10 PM and 6 AM.
