Guwahati: The historic Uzanbazar Fish Market, a cultural landmark in the heart of the city, is bracing for its busiest day of the year-Uruka, the eve of Magh Bihu. With a tradition spanning over 200 years, the market sees fish traders from districts like Morigaon, Nalbari, Barpeta, and Darrang bring in fresh river fish for thousands of eager buyers.
However, this year, the market faces challenges due to reduced space, raising concerns about crowd management during the festive rush. Fish sellers began arriving as early as 3 am to prepare their stalls for the surge in buyers. Varieties like Rohu, Katla, and the prized Chitol are among the most sought-after, with sales expected to cross several lakhs by the end of the day.
Kundan Nath, a trader from Barpeta who has been a part of the market for over three decades, shared, "This market has seen generations of traders and buyers. Uruka morning is the busiest time of the year for us. We sell more fish on this single day than in an entire month."
However, concerns about reduced space loom large. A member of the Uzanbazar Fish Market Committee stated, "The space is much less compared to previous years, and managing the crowd will be difficult. We've raised this issue with the authorities, who assured us of discussing security arrangements. But we'll only know how it goes on the day." Buyers also echoed these worries.
"The market is always crowded during Bihu. With less space this year, it might be chaotic. I hope the authorities have made proper arrangements," said a resident of Chandmari. To streamline operations, the west side of the market has been designated for wholesale traders.
"Around 40 wholesalers will participate, while over 15,000 small traders from various districts are expected for direct sales and auctions," added another committee member. Despite the challenges, the Uzanbazar Fish Market continues to hold its place as a vital part of Guwahati's cultural fabric. As Uruka approaches, both traders and buyers remain hopeful that the spirit of Bihu will prevail, ensuring a successful and joyous celebration.
