Guwahati: A section of a guard wall along the Bahini River in the Beltola Market area suddenly collapsed, claiming the life of 50-year-old Anju Rongpi and injuring three others. The tragic incident, which occurred in one of the city’s busiest marketplaces, has once again raised serious concerns over the crumbling state of public infrastructure in Assam’s capital.

Anju Rongpi, a resident of Khetri Borbitoli in Kamrup (Metro), was among the four people who were injured in the sudden collapse. She was initially rushed to a hospital but later referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) due to the severity of her injuries. Despite efforts by the medical team, she succumbed to injuries.

The incident unfolded around noon on Wednesday when the guard wall—flanking a stretch of the Bahini River that runs adjacent to the market—gave way. Eyewitnesses described a scene of panic and confusion, as vendors, shoppers, and pedestrians scrambled to safety amid the deafening crash.

“I had just finished lunch and sat down when the wall suddenly gave way. It was terrifying—people were screaming and running everywhere,” recounted a visibly shaken vendor who witnessed the tragedy unfold.

Three other individuals sustained injuries in the collapse and were immediately provided medical attention. They are Laiphung Boro (46) of Dangar Makha, Baksa, currently undergoing treatment, Muktar Deory (60) of 2 No. Chilaguti of Baksa and Bhogila Rajbongshi (60) of Kohora of Kamrup (M).

Emergency services, including ambulances and rescue teams, responded within minutes of the collapse, evacuating the injured and sealing off the affected area to prevent further harm. Authorities have since initiated a preliminary investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the failure, which is suspected to be due to long-term structural neglect.

The Beltola market area, which attracts hundreds of vendors and buyers daily from across Assam, remains a vital commercial hub. However, in the aftermath of the collapse, its operations have been partially suspended and are now being monitored under increased security and scrutiny.

Civic officials have assured the public that a formal inquiry will be conducted and necessary action taken. “We will be conducting a thorough audit of the structure and similar installations in the area. Public safety is our top priority,” stated a senior official from the Guwahati Municipal Corporation.

Residents and traders alike have demanded immediate safety audits and long-overdue maintenance of infrastructure across the city, warning that the collapse is a wake-up call for civic authorities.
