Guwahati: A woman from Bhetapara has fallen prey to an organized syndicate that targets young women and girls by misusing their photographs on social media platforms.
According to allegations, the gang created an obscene Facebook group titled ‘Asomiya Buwari’r Gopan Kotha’ (Secret Stories of Assamese Daughters-in-law), where they uploaded the woman’s photo without her consent and launched a smear campaign. The group allegedly placed price tags on women’s images and circulated them among users, leading to serious privacy violations and mental trauma for the victims.
The syndicate reportedly used the woman’s image to extort money from multiple individuals via different mobile numbers, posing as the victim or related entities.
The affected woman has lodged a formal complaint with the Crime Branch, following which the police have initiated an investigation into the incident. Authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious about their digital presence and to report any suspicious online activity to the cyber crime cell.
