Headache for GMC (Guwahati Municipal Corporation)!

Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI: The GMC (Guwahati Municipal Corporation) continues to be under the burden of hundreds of tonnes of garbage which Guwahati produces every day. In the absence of dumping sites in the metropolitan city and its outskirts, garbage disposal continues to be a serious problem for the civic body. The problems surfaced when the NGT (National Green Tribunal) asked the GMC to shift its dumping site from Boragaon to elsewhere keeping an eye on the biodiversity of the Deepor Beel Bird Sanctuary. As of now, the civic body has chosen four sites – Basistha, Udalbakra, Byrnihat and Chandrapur – for dumping garbage. However, none of the four sites has been finalized. The local people of Chandrapur have already registered their protest against the proposed dumping ground there by staging a demonstration. Guwahati produces around 500 metric tonnes garbage, including 20 per cent plastic garbage, daily.
