GUWAHATI: A huge quantity of body parts of rare species of wild animals were recovered from a shop near the Kamakhya temple under the Khanamukh Forest Beat on Tuesday evening, during a joint operation by personnel of the Guwahati Forest Range and the Kamakhya Police Outpost. Sources said two persons - Santosh Kumar Gupta (44) and Sangit Gupta (35) of Darbhanga in Bihar - have been arrested and booked under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 (as amended up to date) by the Guwahati Forest Range. The recovered wildlife body parts included tiger claws, skull bone of jackals, spikes of porcupines, genitals of monitor lizards, deer musk, deer antlers, sea cowries, sea conchs, sea fans, corals, jackals' teeth etc.

According to the sources, the raid was executed under the supervision of Divisional Forest Officer Rohini Ballav Saikia and Range Officer Pranjal Baruah on the basis of specific input regarding illegal wildlife trade of protected species of wildlife.

The sources added that a case (G/61/2023 under Wildlife Protection Act, 1972) has been registered and further investigation is underway.
