Kamal Nath hits back at Shivraj Singh

GUWAHATI: Reacting sharply to Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's statement in Guwahati on Thursday that the Congress never fulfills its promises, his predecessor and senior Congress leader Kamal Nath said on Friday that during his (Nath's) 11-month tenure he had waived the loans of 26.92 lakh farmers.

Addressing the media at Rajiv Bhawan here on Friday, Nath said, "Singh has the habit of lying. The Congress fulfills whatever promises it makes to the people. During my 11-month tenure as Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister I did waive the loans of 26.92 lakh farmers. It's not my statistics. It's the statistics of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly.

"Soon after coming to power in Assam, the Congress government will implement the 5 Guarantees given to the people of the State in the run-up to the Assembly election.

"In fact, the BJP never keeps its promises. In 2014 Lok Sabha poll and 2016 Assembly election the party promised to solve the problem of unemployment, problems of famers, besides carrying out developmental activities. However, in the 2021 Assembly election, the party is mum on the promises they had made earlier. Rather they create newer issues to lure voters. The State government completed five years. Let the government publish what it has done on the development front in the past five years.

"Assam got a new direction when the UPA was in power at the Centre and the Congress in Dispur. The economic activities were vibrant in the State at that time. However, in the past five years economic activities fell drastically in the State. I know the DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) of the BJP. The people of Assam should also know that. All should know that the BJP is engaged in politics in the name of religion and drive a wedge among religious groups."
