GUWAHATI: Students of the 2018-20 batch of the IDOL (Institute of Distance and Open Learning) are in distress as the institute has not yet conducted the fourth-semester examinations. The 'IDOL' under GU was established in 1998. Formally known as PGCS (Post Graduate Correspondence School), IDOL offers graduate and post-graduate programmes in various streams.

The fourth-semester examinations were scheduled to be conducted in September last year. Now the students are facing an uncertain situation as the institute has not yet taken any decision to conduct the examinations.

"According to the Ministry of Human Resource Development, all examinations should be conducted on the stipulated time. When the COVID situation returned to normalcy last year, the higher education institutes completed their official works and conducted the examinations. But IDOL didn't take any initiative. However, the GU conducted the examinations of its regular courses through different processes including online mode. This year too, the GU conducted online examinations for different courses. If the GU can conduct examinations, why is the IDOL failing to do so?" questioned a student of the institute.

Another student pointed out that the Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University and Indira Gandhi National Open University have also conducted their final examinations for the 2018-20 batch. The students have demanded the institute's administration to conduct the examinations whether by online mode, open-book method, or any other system.

It is to be noted that, on the other hand, a probe is underway against the IDOL for offering unapproved courses from 2010 to 2017.
