Guwahati: After upgrading the Jalukbari-Khanapara Guwahati bypass from the earlier four lanes to six lanes, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is planning to illuminate this stretch of the NH. Also, plans are afoot to construct five foot overbridges at different points to facilitate the movement of pedestrians. Both projects are estimated to cost around Rs 50 crore.

According to NHAI sources, the initial work on illumination of the bypass, comprising a length of 17.228 km, has already started, and the work has been awarded to Roadlink Infratech Pvt. Ltd. The cost estimate for this project is Rs 10.14 crore. The target for completion of this work is December 2025.

NHAI sources further said that five new footbridges will be constructed at Jalukbari, near Assam Engineering College, Tetelia, Gorchuk (near CPWD office), Royal Global University point and Lalmati (near Games Village). NHAI authorities felt that, after the upgrading of the bypass to a six-lane one, pedestrians faced problems in crossing the road. It is to ensure the safety of pedestrians and facilitate their movement that the NHAI decided to construct the foot overbridges.

Regarding the work on upgrading the Guwahati bypass, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma took to his X handle to say, “Prioritising pedestrian convenience... @NHAI_Official is building 5 foot overbridges with escalators in the Guwahati Bypass of NH27 at important junctions to ensure safe crossing of pedestrians, especially students... Streetlights will also be installed in the entire stretch.”
