GUWAHATI: The Joint Action Committee of Recognized Unions (JACRU) of the Nagaon and Cachar paper mills has appealed to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to expeditiously implement "in letter and spirit" the agreement/MoU arrived at between the State Government and the unions/associations of the Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited on September 28, 2021.

JACRU president Manobendra Chakraborty further urged the Chief Minister to ensure speedy disbursal of the relief package under the agreement.

This, he said, was imperative for "rescue of the workers and employees of HPC Cachar and Nagaon Paper Mills. We shall be highly obliged for your urgent intervention to save the lives of the workers and employees struggling for survival," he added.

Chakraborty reminded the Chief Minister that the agreement/MoU in question "was reached under your dynamic leadership between the Government of Assam and employees' unions/associations of the HPC."

It may be recalled that the State Government took over the assets of Nagaon and Cachar paper mills via an agreement signed on March 29 this year.

The Cachar Paper Mill at Panchgram in the Hailakandi district closed down on October, 2015, while the Nagaon Paper Mill in Jagiroad ceased functioning on March, 2017.

A total of 103 workers of the two paper mills have died since then due to various ailments and financial hardship. Four of the deceased workers committed suicide.
