GUWAHATI: India is set to join the world’s largest grassroots environmental movement, Earth Hour, on March 22, 2025, with a focus on water conservation. The event, which coincides with World Water Day, aims to unite millions of people across the country to take action for the planet.
This year’s Earth Hour theme, #BeWaterWise, emphasizes the importance of water conservation and sustainable practices. India, which shares only 4% of the world’s freshwater resources, is facing a severe water crisis, with nearly two of every five wetlands lost in the last 30 years.
WWF-India has roped in several national ambassadors, including Dia Mirza, Shantanu Moitra, Ranveer Brar, and Sudarsan Pattnaik, to support the cause. Popular Assamese actor Arghadeep Baruah and MasterChef India winner Nayanjyoti Saikia have also joined as Earth Hour Water Ambassadors from Assam.
The event will feature a series of activities, including a clean-up action at Lachit Ghat, a biodiversity walk, and a wetland photo walk. An evening celebration, featuring performances by university and college students, will be held at Central Mall, Guwahati.
WWF-India Secretary-General and CEO, Ravi Singh, emphasized the importance of collective action for water conservation. “Every year, Earth Hour brings together millions of people across India – and around the world – in a symbolic act of switching off lights for the planet. This year, its alignment with World Water Day has given us an opportunity to drive collective action for water conservation.”
