GUWAHATI: A new organisation — ICCI (Indigenous Chambers of Commerce & Industries) — was constituted to protect and promote the local businessmen in Assam on Saturday. It was formed during a meeting here.

Talking to 'The Sentinel, the advisor of ICCI — Anup Chetia — said, "It is a cause of concern as to why many indigenous businessmen are failing to make strides despite many opportunities. It is, of course, true that Assamese traders are facing many problems and hurdles at every step.

"A prime reason for this is that the traders and their cartels —from outside the state — have already grabbed most of the businesses. These traders are carrying on their businesses according to their whim and caprices solely to earn profit."

Chetia added, "The time has arrived for the indigenous businessmen to join hands against such unholy nexus of the traders from outside the state.

"The ICCI is constituted to boost the businesses of the indigenous businessmen of Assam."

The president of this newly formed ICCI is Dr Dilip Sarma, while the joint secretaries are Biswajit Dutta and Pradip Saikia. Among the dignitaries present at the meeting were retired IPS officer Pallab Bhattacharyya, and noted agriculture scientist Girin Hazarika.
