Inland Water Transport (IWT): Life Buoys Mandated In All Water Transports

GUWAHATI: The Inland Water Transport (IWT) department has enumerated certain safety measures with the onset of the rainy season to prevent any mishap or untoward incident from occurring. There have been reports of many water boat accidents in the past while crossing the turbulent waters of the rain fed water bodies, which has mandated certain precautionary measures. The IWT has ordered use of life jackets/ life buoys/ life rafts on all ferries and boats. The number of life jackets on a boat or ferry must correspond to the number of passengers and crew. In all journeys, the passengers must be made to wear life jackets. The safe – worthiness of the buoys/ rafts/ jackets need to be checked at frequent intervals. At the start of every trip, the master operator or other responsible crew members should give safety briefing to the passengers. These measures should be strictly followed in all IWT ferries just like announcements made in passenger aircrafts before take-off and landing.
