International Nurses Day: Frontline fighters serving people with pride

GUWAHATI: 'Nursing the World to Health,' the theme for the International Nurses Day 2020 seems to hold a remarkable significance as this year the forefront warriors who are considered as the backbone of healthcare system are serving the society by risking their lives during the COVID-19 pandemic.

At a time where nationwide lockdown has bound other people to stay at home, the nurses are at forefront fighting the coronavirus and saving lives. On the occasion of the International Nurse Day, The Sentinel talked with such frontline warriors of different parts of the state so as to know their part of story during the lockdown.

Talking to The Sentinel, Kunja Bora, Ward In charge of the Gyne OT Department of Kushal Konwar Civil Hospital, Golaghat said, "We are working on the forefront in the fight against the COVID-19. All of us are trying our level best to provide proper healthcare to the patients so that we can save lives amid the pandemic." Bora added that they are maintaining their works by following precautionary measures. She said, "Even during operation of other patients we strictly follow the use of masks, caps and hand gloves. I urge everyone to not panic and follow every step with precaution. Following preventive measure is the only way that we can fight against the pandemic."

Lyntihun Kshiar, a nurse working in the Down Town Hospital Guwahati who originally belongs to Shillong, Meghalaya said, "On the occasion of International Nurse Day I want to say that I feel proud that my parents had chosen me for this profession. We are serving the patients during this lockdown by following the guidelines of doctors. The people here in the city as well as the people of Assam are very good. I feel proud that I have received the opportunity to serve people in a Guwahati based hospital."

A staff Nurse of the Titabar Sub-Divisional Civil Hospital, Danu Rabha said, "I feel honoured that I am engaged in profession that is purely dedicated to serve the society. It's our duty to serve the people with proper healthcare, so that we can witness a healthy society. Most of the activity has stopped due to the lockdown, but we can't stop even when the whole nation is under lockdown."

Karabi Baruah, a staff nurse working in the NRL Hospital, Numaligarh said, "Till now we have not dealt with COVID patients. However, we are following all the precautionary measures to fight against the novel coronavirus. Though there's a fear of getting infected in such a situation, but we are at service for the sake of the society and we are ready to fight against the situation. Though we're not dealing with any COVID patient, yet we're strictly following the preventive measures by using hand sanitizers, masks and gloves."

It is to be mentioned that the healthcare workers of the Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH), Guwahati which has also been serving as a Corona Hospital have left no stone unturned in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Amidst the critical situation, the frontline warriors of the MMCH celebrated the International Nurses Day and 200th anniversary of the birth of Florance Nightingale, the founder of Modern Nursing.
