Iodine Deficiency Prevention Day organized across Assam

GUWAHATI: The State Cell of the National Iodine Deficiency Disorders Control Programme, Health and Family Welfare Department of Assam, has celebrated Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders Prevention Day. An intersectoral meeting was organized as a finale to the series of awareness campaigns organized in all district headquarters of the state. These campaigns comprised various activities, including rallies, quizzes, and other awareness programmes regarding issues related to iodine deficiency disorders, their prevention, the usefulness of idolised salt, and its importance in all age groups.

The intersectoral meeting begins with a welcome speech by Dr. Sutapa Chakrabarty, Consultant, NPPCF, NHM, followed by the lighting of the lamp by dignitaries from GMCH and the Health Department. Dr. N. Shyam, Addl. DHS, Assam, Dr. Heramba Kumar Bhattacharya, Jt. DHS {(HQ)Assam-cum-state Nodal Officer, NIDDCP Assam, Dr. Jutika Ojha, Professor and HOD Dept. of Community Medicine GMCH, Dr Chinmayee Barthakur, Associate Professor, Community Medicine, GMCH-cum-SNQ, NIDDCP, GMCH, along with Designated Food Safety Officers Samiran Barua and Anil Sharma, graced the ideas and presented their views on various aspects of lodine deficiency and related disorders. Nobashri Gogol is in charge Dy DHS-cum-technical officers. NIDDCP gave a detailed idea about the success of the NIDDCP programme and its overall standpoint in front of the participants from education, social welfare, nursing colleges, P&RD, railways, NGOs, etc.

State Nodal Officers of the NIDDCP Programme, Jt. DHS (HQ) of the Directorate of Health Service, Assam, Dr. Heramba Kumar Bhattacharya, shared that efforts are being made to raise awareness amongst the public regarding iodine deficiency disorder and the uses of iodized salt. He also stated that iodine deficiency is most prevalent in pregnant women and infants. His presentation threw light on the overall activities carried out under this programme and the related health issues among the people. Food Safety Officer Samiran Barua explained the role of food safety in controlling the sale of iodized salt in Assam. The meeting ended with a vote of thanks by Nobashri Gogoi, followed by feedback from participants.
