Guwahati: A surveillance operation has been conducted by the Kamrup Metropolitan District Administration at Big Bazaar and Roodraksh Mall at Bhangagarh in Guwahati.

It has been carried out against those who do not wear masks in public places and against those who do not possess the two dose vaccine certificate.

According to the new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) issued by the Assam government on 7 January, only double vaccinated people can go out to public places such as shopping malls, cinema halls, theaters, etc.

The latest SOP also mentions that a fine of Rs. 25,000 will be imposed against the organization who allow people to enter its premises without wearing masks and showing their vaccine certificates.

In other words, the particular shops or malls or organizations will have to incur the costs.

Three people have been reportedly penalized for not wearing masks during the surveillance drive in Guwahati as of now.

This drive has been conducted so as to ensure that the protocols are properly followed and the violators do not go unpunished.

This decision comes in the wake of surging covid cases in the state. According to figures released by Assam government, the state has an active caseload of 7707 with the positivity rate clocking at 6.48 percent.

Assam reported 998 new Covid-cases on 9 January with 448 recoveries and one death as per the state's health department.

The recovery rate in the state stands at 97.99 percent and the case fatality rate is 0.99 percent.

Some estimates suggest that the number of positive cases in Assam could surge in the upcoming days and some expert experts have also warned of an incoming third wave across India.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has ruled out the possibility of a future lockdown but has urged everyone to be careful and follow the protocols and avoid complacency.
