GUWAHATI: A critical meeting of the District Road Safety Committee was held on Saturday under the chairmanship of Kamrup Metropolitan Deputy Commissioner Sumit Sattawan, focusing on pressing urban traffic and road safety concerns in the city. The meeting was attended by key officials, including Additional Deputy Commissioner Ajit Kumar Sharma, Special Duty Officer of the Transport Department and Additional District Transport Officer Gautam Das, Member Secretary of the Road Safety Committee Abhijit Chowdhury, District Transport Officer Rajiv Kumar Pegu, and other stakeholders associated with traffic management and road safety enforcement.
A major focus of the discussion was the recent structural collapse at the old jail premises in Fancy Bazar, which raised serious safety and traffic concerns in the area. In response, the committee deliberated on the immediate need to declare specific “No Parking” and “No Vending” zones in and around the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) area to ease traffic congestion and improve pedestrian safety.
The meeting also addressed several additional road safety issues, including:
• Removal of unauthorised signage from road dividers.
• Dismantling of temporary barricades placed at road crossings by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which were reportedly contributing to bottlenecks and confusion among commuters.
These actions form part of a broader strategic plan to minimise traffic-related accidents, injuries, and fatalities within the district through better enforcement and infrastructure coordination.
Deputy Commissioner Sattawan emphasized the need for a coordinated, time-bound response from all concerned departments and agencies. He called upon officials to carry out their duties with seriousness and accountability to ensure effective on-ground implementation of road safety measures.
“The safety of commuters and citizens must be our top priority. A unified, disciplined approach is necessary to create safer roads and prevent avoidable tragedies,” DC Sattawan stated.
The meeting concluded with directives to expedite the enforcement of proposed measures and to ensure regular monitoring for sustained improvement in road safety standards across the Kamrup Metropolitan district.
