AZARA: The Khanajan river gobbled up three residential houses of a single family at Khanamukh under Dhararapur Gaon Panchayat in Kamrup(M) recently. The members of the family were, however, rescued by the police and the villagers.
The incident that took place at 2 pm at night on May 1 rendered homeless seven members of Pramode Barman’s family, besides 13 other members of two families staying on rent. The incident occurred when all of them were fast asleep at 2 am. Pramode Barman is a retired employee of Gauhati University. Earlier they heard a cracking sound. Barman’s son and one of the tenants went and saw that the guard wall erected by the Department of Water Resources some ten years ago to prevent erosion at the spot had collapsed. Soon they raised a hue and cry and that led the other members staying in the three houses come out. Barely could they come out of the dwellings, the three houses were swept away by the water current. Soon the villagers came to their rescue, and the police too reached the spot.
Local MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita soon telephoned the Deputy Commissioner with the plea of rehabilitating the affected family members. The DC soon asked the Azara Revenue Circle Officer to make an on-the-spot visit and submit a detailed report.
